Cancer Smashers!

The kick off assembly for our Cancer Smashers fundraiser against Eisenhower was a great success! Our student council kids did a great job representing Lakeview!

Next week we are lucky to have Mrs. Adelman from the Township of Downers Grove presenting the Lifeskills program. The Lifeskills program is taught at all of the surrounding junior highs. It is a GREAT opportunity for students to learn skills for use in their every day lives.

The sixth grade program focuses on bullying. Students will learn what to do in situations where they are victims of bullying. They will also learn how to help friends and how to make sure they are not being bullies themselves.

The seventh grade program focuses on drug education. The presentation goes along wonderfully with the Lakeview drug education curriculum. The students will discuss what certain drugs do to the body. The focus will be on refusal skills and how to "Say NO."

The eighth grade program focuses on stress management and goal setting. Students will learn ways to relieve stress and how to prevent it from happening. They will also practice goal setting with an emphasis on preparing for high school.

The students should have a wonderful week! Please ask your child about the program and what they are learning :)

There is a ton going on in student council next week!

Next Friday is open gym night from 6:30-8:30. Tickets are $4 and include pizza and pop that will be served.

Next Friday is a green and gold spirit day. We will have a special assembly to kick off a school wide "cancer smashers" fundraiser. More information about the fundraiser will be given out at the assembly.

Also, Pack the place is quickly approaching. Spirit wear shirts and spirit items can be purchased to use during the games on February 13th and 14th. All orders are due to Mrs. Conley by January 20th. If you have questions, just ask! :)

Happy New Year!

In health this week, 6th graders are working on a mental health project. The projects are being done with partners and will be presented to the class next week. In addition, the first unit test will take place in health class next week. Students will receive a study guide and will have review time in class.

The seventh graders are working on the tobacco unit. They are working on anti-smoking projects that are due next Friday.

The eighth graders are wrapping up the nutriton unit. We have been discussing eating disorders this week and what to do if you suspect a friend is suffering from an eating disorder. The nutrition unit test and folder check will be on Monday.

Welcome December!

2nd trimester health classes are in full swing. We are moving right along and have gotten into all of our first topics.

The sixth graders are beginning a unit on personal health, stress and mental health. The main topic of discussion for next week will be stress and how to deal with it.

The seventh graders are working on decision making and goal setting. It was really interesting to hear some of the long-term goals that students have!

The eighth grade classes are studying the nutrition unit. We are starting our diet analysis projects. Students will be surprised to take a closer look at their eating habits! Next week they will be watching Supersize Me and discussing mealth choices.

Hello! My name is Andrea Conley and I am your child’s health teacher this trimester. As an encore teacher, I have the privilege of working with many students for all three years that they attend Lakeview. This is my ninth year at the school and I love it here!

Many parents and students have questions and concerns regarding the sometimes “touchy” issues that my class covers. You are welcome to review the health curriculum by going to: http://www.ccsd66.org/health.htm Additionally, your child will be responsible for keeping up with a class folder. Feel free to take a look in their folder at any time for an update on our class work. I encourage discussions at home regarding the subject matter we are covering in class.

My late work policy is as follows:
*1 day late = 25% off the grade
* 2+ days late = 50% off the grade
* Students have until the end of the lesson/chapter/unit to turn in the assignment at which point the grade will become a 0 if not turned in.

Stuffed Animal & Book Drive

Last week, the student council sponsored a stuffed animal and book drive to support the Dupage County Court House Safe Harbor room which provides child care for families that are in court. Hundreds of stuffed animals and books were donated by our Lakeview students! Thanks to all who participated.

This week is the last week of 1st trimester. It is unbelievable that the school year is already 1/3 of the way over. The final day with 1st trimester classes is on Thursday and then students will start their new classes on Friday.

With that being said, the last day that late Health class work will be accepted is on Wednesday. If any student has any late or missing assignments to turn in, please be sure it is to me by WEDNESDAY!

I have greatly enjoyed working with my first trimester classes and I look forward to meeting 2nd trimester on Friday!

Stuffed Animal & Book Drive

During the week of November 7th, the Lakeview Student Council is sponsoring a stuffed animal and children's book donation drive. We will happily accept any gently used or new stuffed animals or picture books. All collected items will go the Dupage County Court House Safe Harbor room which provides child care for families that are in court. When children leave the child care room they are invited to take a book or stuffed animal with them. This provides comfort to a lot of children. Any donations would be greatly appreciated!

This was another busy week in health class. All classes are wrapping up sections and will take unit tests on Friday, Oct. 21st.

Next week the sixth graders will begin the body systems unit. We will be discussing all of the major body systems and how they work together.

The seventh graders will be starting the drug unit. We will be discussing how drugs affect the body, what addiction is and most importantly refusal skills.

The eighth graders will be discussing communicable diseases including sexually transmitted infections.

8th grade Amplify program

Dear Parents of Eighth Grade Students:

As a part of our overall health and prevention program, Lakeview Jr. High School will sponsor the Amplify Youth Development Program for our eighth grade students during the 2011-2012 school year.

The Amplify Program is designed to provide junior high school students with information and resources to properly deal with relationship issues before dating begins. It is our sincere belief that properly educated adolescents are much more likely to make good decisions, develop healthy relationships and postpone involvement in sexual activity.

The Amplify Program will be presented to students at Lakeview during health education classes. Though not every student is enrolled in health class, all eighth graders will participate in the one week program at some point in the school year.

In preparation for the Amplify Program, a special parent presentation will be held at Lakeview on Tuesday, October 18th at 6:00 pm in the IMC. This presentation is designed to educate parents about the Amplify program and to give parents resources and information to help talk to kids about the issues of sexuality education. While kids will learn these things during health class, parent involvement and discussion at home is key.

Next week in health 6th graders will be continuing our unit on fitness. 7th graders will begin the drug and alcohol unit and 8th graders will be wrapping up discussions on the topic of death and dying.

Lifeskills was excellent this week! I think the students had an outstanding experience discussing and participating in class activities.

Next week the students can look forward to the following:

6th grade students will begin the physical fitness unit. We will discuss the components of fitness and what is important in a fitness plan.

7th graders will present Tobacco projects Monday. The remainder of the week we will wrap up the tobacco unit and finish with the test and folder check on Friday.

8th graders will be working on the Death and Dying unit. We will watch Tuesdays with Morrie and discuss stages of grief.

My sixth grade homebase is an amazing group of students! They continue to work together to earn the Spartan Stars and redeem them as a class. We had a super fun morning playing Wii before school and during homebase. It was a blast and I'm so thankful that everyone loves to work together :)

Health classes are in full swing! I can't believe we are already halfway through September.

Sixth grade classes are continuing to talk about mental and emotional health. We have spent a lot of time discussing stress and positive ways to deal with our stress. The first 6th grade health test will be next week. Students will receive a study guide but if they'd like to get a head start on reviwing, they can study the vocabulary words in their health notes!

Seventh graders are wrapping up a mini-unit on friendship and peer pressure. They completed essays on the topic of friendship. Next week we will begin discussing tobacco and what it does to the body.

Eighth grade classes watched the movie Supersize Me this week. We are continuing our discussion on nutrition and will talk about eating disorders next week. Next week will be the first unit test over the topic of Nutrition. Students can begin reviewing their nutrition notes in their folders.

My 2011-2012 6th grade homebase is off to a great start! They are such an enthusiastic, fun group to work with. They are doing an impressive job earning PBIS Spartan Stars and have decided to work as a group to earn large prizes. This week they get to come in during homebase and play Wii. Today, they also earned an outdoor lunch with me! :)

One week down!

Well, I'm glad to say, we've all survived the first week of school! :) The year is off to a great start and I'm enjoying getting to know all of my new students.

In 6th grade health, students are getting the hang of my classroom procedures and working on getting to class on time before tardies start next week. We will start our unit on mental and emotional health and will be discussing stress next week.

The 7th grade students are learning about decision making and being responsible. They will have their first folder check and quiz next Thursday.

The 8th graders are continuing in the nutrition unit next week. They will be in the IMC working on a personal nutrition evaluation. It is always interesting to look at the student's results!

I am so excited to start the 2011-2012 school year! I hope everyone has had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and that you are ready to get back to school :)

Health students can look forward to brand new text books this year. We will be using the Glencoe health series.

Topics covered in health this year are as follows:

6th grade: health, wellness, physical activity, fitness, exercise, mental and emotional health, stress, self esteem, body systems, personal health

7th grade: goal setting, values, ethics, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, safety and injury prevention, conflict resolution and healthy relationships

One more week until Spring Break!

The sixth graders will have their first test on Thursday over chapter 1 of the text. This section covers different components of Mental Health. All students will receive a study guide and we will have time to review in class before the test.

The seventh graders will be working on the friendship and peer pressure unit next week. We are discussing what makes a good friend. Students will be writing an essay about their best friends next week.

The eighth graders are continuing with the nutrition unit. The have completed their diet anyalysis projects and next week we will be watching and discussing the film "Supersize Me."

The sixth graders are starting with the mental and emotional health unit. They will be discussing stress next week and coming up with healthy ways to reduce stress.

The seventh graders are talking about habits and responsible decision making. They will have the chapter 2 quiz and folder check next Wednesday.

The eighth graders are in the middle of the nutrition unit. Next week we will be in the IMC working on a diet analyzing project. It will be interesting for the students to take a closer look at their daily diet!

We are getting close to the end of second trimester. All late and missing work needs to be turned in by next week for credit!

The sixth graders are wrapping up the Body System unit. They will be receiving a study guide today. We will review the study guide and the unit test and folder check will be on Tuesday!

The seventh grade classes are continuing work on the drug unit. The will be doing in class group research on different types of drugs to learn short and long term affects.

The eighth grade classes will start in the "Gameplan" books. These books focus on goal setting and making positive choices and how sexual activity could affect their goals.

The week back after break has been really productive in health classes.

The sixth graders are learning about fitness. They have been in the IMC looking at various websites about teen fitness to gain an understanding on how important maintaining a level of fitness is.

The seventh graders wrapped up the tobacco unit this week. They took the unit test today and had a folder check. Their tobacco projects are due Monday. Next week we will be beginning a unit on alcohol.

The eighth graders watched the movie "Tuesdays with Morrie" this week. They are learning about the Kubler-Ross stages of grief and we are discussing how different cultures deal with death.

How can this already be the last week before Winter Break?!

The sixth graders have started a unit on physical health. They will be learning about the importance of exercise and hygiene. They will also be doing a study of their own sleep to determine if they are doing well or if they need more rest!

The seventh grade classes are starting the tobacco unit. They will be learning what tobacco can do to the body and ways to say no.

The eighth graders are wrapping up the nutrition unit this week. They will be taking the nutrition unit test as well as having the first folder check on Wednesday.

Next Friday, November 12th is the last day of the trimester. I have greatly enjoyed working with my 1st trimester classes but am looking forward to meeting new students.

The sixth grade classes have the final test on Monday. They should be fully prepared after discussing and reviewing a very in-depth study guide. The final folder check is Monday as well.

The seventh graders had their final test today. There are several students missing work. As a reminder, the final day to turn in late work is Wednesday.

The eighth grade classes are finishing the teen parent projects. The students have greatly enjoyed these projects... ask them about it!

I love my sixth grade homebase this year! They are so enthusiastic and we have a great time each morning in homebase. Today was Lakeview "class color" spirit day and I'm proud to say that EVERYONE in my homebase wore red!

Now that we are four weeks into the trimester, every student has had several grades entered into the gradebook. Parents should take an opportunity to review the grades and find out if the student is missing any work.

We are in full swing in health classes. It has been a great start to the school year and I've enjoyed getting to know all my new students.

The sixth graders are in a unit on mental and emotional health. They are talking about stress and ways to reduce it.

The eighth grade classes are finishing a food pyramid project where they analyzed their daily diets. They will be watching the movie "Supersize Me" and discussing the issues of non-healthy eating in America.

All students will be required to do a Current Health Events presentation during the trimester. Students have selected the date of their presentation. The presentations will begin next Friday. The requirements for this assignment are as follows:

Health information is constantly changing. It is important to keep current on news that will affect the health of ourselves and our families. This trimester, we will be sharing current health information with the class. Each student will be responsible for finding an article to summarize and share with the class. The following steps should be taken to complete this assignment:

1) Find a current health article! The article can be about any type of health information. Your article should come from one of the following sources: a newspaper, magazine or a reliable website such as cnn.com, chicagotribune.com or usnews.com
Be sure to cut out or print the article, it will need to be turned in with your summary!

2) Write a summary! The summary should explain what the article says, in your own words. You should be able to understand all of the words that you write in your summary! Please, don't write anything that you don't understand! In addition to explaining what the article is about, you should write a paragraph that explains your opinion on the topic. The summary needs to be typed (size 12, Times font, double spaced and at least 1 page long!)

3)Present your information to the class! You will be sharing your article and summary with the class on your assigned day. Make sure that you fully understand what the article is about so you can explain it to our class. Please keep your presentation to 2-3 minutes!

This week in health class, the 8th grade AWARE program will take place. Students will receive this presentation during their regular health class. If a student is not in health class they will be “pulled out” of their fifth or eighth hour class during one of the trimesters for this four day presentation.

During the four day program, several community agencies will present information on the topic of sexuality education. Topics addressed will include: Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Sexual Violence prevention, Teen Pregnancy and general decision making.

There was a parent meeting about the AWARE program that 8th grade parents were invited to in the fall. Aspects of the sexuality education program were discussed. If any parent would like further information about the program, contact Mrs. Conley.

Lifeskills last week was wonderful! This week we are back to our regular health classes.

The 6th graders are starting a unit on physical health. They will be learning about hygiene, excercise and keeping fit.

The 7th graders are working on a tobacco project of their choice. They will be wrapping up the tobacco unit this week and taking the chapter test next Monday.

The 8th graders are doing a unit about Death & Dying. They will be watching the movie "Tuesday With Morrie" and discussing death and dying in our culture and others.

This week all of the health classes are busy working on projects in the IMC.

The sixth graders are creating "stress busters" fliers using Microsoft Publisher. They are creating documents that could suggest ways kids in sixth grade can reduce their stress. The students are having fun creating colorful, creative fliers!

The seventh graders are typing essays about their best friends. We are discussing how important it is to have good friends and what qualities of friendship are important.

The eighth grade classes are doing diet analysis projects using the website: mypyramid.gov This project is showing the students what they are doing well and what they need to improve in their daily diets. Students have been pretty surprised about their project results!

Third trimester is in full swing! I have greatly enjoyed getting to know all of my new students for the past week. Grades are starting to be taken and the online gradebook will reflect those grades this week.

The sixth graders are starting with a section on mental health. They will be focusing on causes of stress and ways to reduce stress.

The seventh graders are starting with a section on being a good person, making responsible decisions and goal setting. All of these topics are very important for a person's future!

Eighth grade classes have started with the nutrition unit. They will be exploring their own nutrient intake and deciding if they are healthy eaters or not!

Snowflake 2010

On Saturday, March 20, seventh grade students from Lakeview, Herrick and O'Neill will have the unique opportunity to participate in a Snowflake event. Snowflake is a day long event for seventh grade students that explore leadership and communication skills, healthy decision making, substance abuse prevention and how to resist negative peer influences. The event is planned and implemented by trained high school students with adults serving in advisory roles. The program is a collaborative effort between Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Lakeview, Herrick Middle School, O'Neill Middle, The Downers Grove Police Department and Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence (HGNA). District 66 and District 58 believe this program is important to help our seventh grade students navigate through adolescence. The Snowflake Event will take place at Lakeview Junior High from 2-9 pm. Registration is $20 a person and registration is being accepted in the school offices until March 8, 2010. Lakeview students received information on this event this week. Additional registration packets will be available in the office. Questions can be referred to Mrs. Liles or Mrs. Conley.

It's hard to believe, but second trimester is quickly coming to a close! There is a week and a half left before encore classes will switch. With the end coming up, there are many final assignments due.

In sixth grade, students are finishing up the body systems unit. The chapter test will be given next week.

The seventh graders are working on a sexual harassment and domestic violence unit.

The eighth graders are working on the "Gameplan" abstinence curriculum. They will also be doing a teen parent project before the end of the trimester.

Next week we are lucky to have Mr. Shilliga from the Township of Downers Grove presenting the Lifeskills program. The Lifeskills program is taught at all of the surrounding junior highs. It is a GREAT opportunity for students to learn skills for use in their every day lives.

The sixth grade program focuses on bullying. Students will learn what to do in situations where they are victims of bullying. They will also learn how to help friends and how to make sure they are not being bullies themselves.

Happy New Year! I hope the start of 2010 has been great for everyone. It is good to be back to school and into our routine of working and learning.

The seventh graders are starting the tobacco unit. They are learning about what smoking does to the body and what the short and long term effects of smoking are.

The eighth graders are finishing the nutrition unit this week. We will be discussing eating disorders and talking about healthy weight loss plans. Their nutrition test will be early next week.

Second trimester classes have been off to a great start. It's hard to believe that Winter Break is already upon us. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday with their families!

The AWARE program will begin in 8th grade health classes next week. The following is a statement from the AWARE program describing what the presentations will involve. What is AWARE?

AWARE, a comprehensive prevention program, is designed to provide middle/junior high school students with the information and resources they need to face tough relationship issues. Young people who are informed and educated are more likely to make healthy decisions, develop healthy relationships and postpone sexual involvement.

AWARE comprises five components hosted by three collaborative partners: Teen Parent Connection, the YWCA West Suburban Center, and the Robert Crown Center for Health Education.

A Parent Workshop is held in advance of the student
program. It is designed to educate parents about the
issues of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections
and sexual assault.. Agency representatives describe
each component of the AWARE program, answer
questions and provide information on community
resources surrounding these issues.

Student workshops include interactive discussions with presenters from:

Robert Crown Center for Health Education focuses on the transmission, long-term consequences, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

Teen Parent Connection utilizes health educators and adolescent parents to share with students the long term realities of teen pregnancy and parenting. A Teen Parent Connection Health Educator focuses on decision making, healthy sexuality and the emotional and physical risks of early sexual activity.

YWCA West Suburban Center involves students in a discussion about sexual violence and how to recognize when a relationship becomes potentially abusive.

Each agency offers supportive services that complement the information provided to students and their parents. These additional services may be obtained by contacting the appropriate agency.

It's hard to believe that first trimester is already half way over! Before we know it, it will be time to switch encore classes. 1st trimester health classes have been working hard and doing a fantastic job.

In sixth grade, we are continuing work on the physical health unit. Students have been learning about the importance of exercise and keeping their bodies fit.

Seventh grade students on the drug and alcohol unit. They turned in tobacco projects on Monday and did very impressive work.

The eighth graders just started the Health Behavior Contract project. For this project, they decide on one area of their health that they would like to improve and choose something that they would like to turn into a daily habit. They will work on their health goal and monitor it for the next month. Hopefully all of the students picked something that they truly want to improve in their lives!

Thank you to Mrs. Heckman, our district nurse, for speaking to health classes about illness prevention this week!

With the flu season approaching and the recent spread of H1N1, it is important to follow the tips that Mrs. Heckman shared with our classes. She said that in order to prevent the spread of illness, we should all take the following steps:

-make sure to get enough sleep
-eat healthy foods
-wash hands with warm soap and water as frequently as possible!
-if you sneeze, try to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your arm
-throw tissues away as soon as you use them
-use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands with soap and water
-do NOT share any type of food or drink with others
-avoid touching your face at any time

I hope that students are able to follow these steps in order to avoid as much illness as possible!

The school year is off and running! It's been a wonderful beginning of the year. Health classes are busy working and learning.

The sixth grade classes are wrapping up the Chapter one unit. They have focused on Stress, Mental health and decision making. They had their first folder check last week and will have their first test this week.

The seventh graders are wrapping up the first unit and will begin working on the tobacco unit. We will be watching several videos and learning all about what tobacco does to the body. Students will be completing a tobacco unit where they will have the chance to creatively share prevention information with other students.

The eighth graders are continuing work in the Nutrition unit. They have been working on a project where they are analyzing their own diets and level of nutrition. Many students have been surprised by how unhealthy they are! We are watching "Supersize Me" in class this week!

It's hard to believe there are only two weeks left in the school year! Today, we completed the week long Life Skills program presented by the Downers Grove Township. Next week we will begin to wrap up our units and prepare for final tests/projects.

The sixth graders will spend the final weeks learning about the changes they will experience on the road to adulthood.

The seventh graders are completing the alcohol and drug unit. There will be a unit review day on Tuesday, followed by the test on Wednesday.

The eighth grade classes completed their personal 'Life Goals' list this week. Ask your child to share with you their list. Many students put a lot of thought into this 'goal setting' activity. Next week they will be working on the "Teen Parent: Real World" project. Students will gain an understanding of how hard becoming a parent can be!

Health classes are going quite well and the students have transitioned well with me as their teacher. It has been a pleasure getting to know them on a daily basis.

Sixth graders will be completing the Body Systems unit next week with the final test on Friday the 15th of May.

Ask your seventh grader about the alcohol simulation activity we had in class today. Goggles were used to help the children simulate the affects of alcohol on the body while performing various activities. We will continue our unit of Drugs and Alcohol next week.

The eighth graders experienced the AWARE program this week during class. Many mature topics were discussed and many questions answered. I encourage you to talk with your child about what they learned this past week in class. The Reproductive Systems test will be on Tuesday, May 12th.

Hello, my name is Mrs. Kim Froats and I have had the privilege to work with your child the past 2 1/2 weeks. I will be covering for Mrs. Conley while she is on maternity leave through the remainder of the school year. Mrs. Conley welcomed home baby Luke Jonathan on April 19th!
As you may know, I was a classroom teacher prior to my four children being born. After many years as a stay at home mom I ventured back into teaching. I have been a substitute teacher in District #66 for 4 years and have been very welcomed by the Lakeview staff. Sixth graders completed the Fitness unit yesterday and will begin a unit of study on the Body Systems. The students have done a great job of maintaining their folders which are collected and graded every few weeks.

Seventh grade health class just began a unit of study on Drugs and Alcohol. Great class discussions have occurred on the affects and prevention of drug and alcohol abuse.

Eighth graders are beginning the Reproductive unit in class. We will spend the week learning about both the female and male reproductive systems in preparation for the AWARE program. The AWARE program will take place next week, May 5th-8th, during your child's health class.

I hope IOWA testing is going well for all of the sixth and seventh graders! It is a crazy week this week but students are hard at work in health class.

The sixth graders are at work on the physical health unit. We are discussing fitness, hygiene and the importance of sleep. Students have been recording their sleep habits for the last few days. We will be taking a look at how students can improve their intake of sleep!

The seventh graders will be wrapping up the tobacco unit this week. They will be working on a tobacco project towards the end of the week. Their unit test and folder check will be on Tuesday of next week.

The eighth graders just completed the nutrition unit. They had their unit test yesterday and can expect their updated grades by Thursday. We are starting a unit on Death & Dying. We will be discussing how different cultures deal with the issues related to death. As an introduction to the unit, we are watching the movie: "Tuesday's with Morrie" in class this week. This is an excellent movie based off of Mitch Albom's non-fiction book.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful, relaxing winter break! We are jumping right back into things in Health class as we continue on in second trimester.

The sixth graders are wrapping up a unit on Mental Health this week. They will have their first unit test at the end of the week along with a folder check. Everyone will receive a study guide and should be fully prepared!

The seventh grade students are starting the tobacco unit this week. They will be learning all about tobacco and what it can do to the body.

The eighth graders are finishing the nutrition unit. We will be discussing eating disorders and healthy weight loss this week. The nutrition unit test and folder check will be next week.

Second trimester is off to a great start. I am enjoying working with all of the new students in my health classes!

The sixth grade classes have been working hard on the mental and emotional health unit. The "Family Coat of Arms" that they presented were very well done. The students are exploring their own personalities and seeing how their families have helped shaped the people they are today! We will not wrap up the first unit until after break so there will not be a chapter test until January.

The seventh graders are wrapping up their first unit this week. We have been discussing responsible decision making, goal setting and avoid health risks. Students were asked to create a list of short and long term goals that they have for themselves. The first test is tomorrow, as well as a folder check.

The eighth graders are continuing to work on the nutrition unit. We have started watching the movie "Supersize Me." Students are amazed to learn how bad eating fast food really is! Next week they will be in the computer lab doing their diet analyzing projects. The Nutrition test will not be until after the winter break.

Hello! My name is Andrea Conley and I am your child’s health teacher this trimester. As an encore teacher, I have the privilege of working with many students for all three years that they attend Lakeview. This is my sixth year at the school and I love it here! I am a graduate of the health education program at Northern Illinois University and have a Master's degree in teaching and leadership from St. Xavier University. In addition, I am very involved in extra curricular programs at Lakeview.

Many parents and students have questions and concerns regarding the sometimes “touchy” issues that my class covers. You are welcome to review the health curriculum by going to: http://www.ccsd66.org/health.htm Additionally, your child will be responsible for keeping up with a class folder. Feel free to take a look in their folder at any time for an update on our class work. I encourage discussions at home regarding the subject matter we are covering in class.

My late work policy is as follows:
*1 day late = 25% off the grade

* Students have until the end of the lesson/chapter/unit to turn in the assignment at which point the grade will become a 0 if not turned in.

First trimester is coming to an end this week. It has been great working with all of the first trimester health students. I look forward to meeting the new second trimester classes next week! I hope that everyone has a wonderful, relaxing Thanksgiving break!

I cannot believe that the school year is a third of the way over... time flies when you're having fun! Health classes are wrapping up for the trimester, but we are still doing some fun things.

The sixth graders have been working out of the "I can Do it!" workbooks. They are excellent books that talk about character traits and being a good person. We have enjoyed reading the stories and relating it to our own mental and emotional health.

The seventh graders are doing a unit on safety. We have covered basic home safety, outdoor safety and what to do in the case of a natural disaster.

The eighth graders are hard at work on "The Real World" projects. They are quickly learning how hard it would be to be a teen parent trying to make it on their own. They are researching how much apartments cost, what a car payment looks like and investigating the costs of baby supplies! I have heard MANY students say that they are very appreciative of all their parents provide!

With only two weeks left in the trimester, things are starting to wrap up in health class.

Sixth graders have completed the body systems unit and are starting a short unit on adolescent growth and development.

Seventh graders are continuing a unit on sexual assault prevention.

Eighth graders are continuing work in the Gameplan workbooks. They will be continuing those throughout the week.

In the last week, MANY student grades have been updated. Please check the parent connect website for your child's current grade.

Remember, with only two weeks left it is incredibly important to get all late and missing work turned in!

This week in health classes, the sixth grade students will continue to work on the body systems unit. We will be wrapping up this Friday. Students will get a study guide in class Friday and should start reviewing for the test over the weekend.

Seventh graders are finishing the drug and alcohol unit. There will be a test and folder check on Friday. Study guides will be given out Wednesday, so students should start reviewing.

Eigth grade classes are finishing the reproductive systems unit. They will be given a study guide on Tuesday and the final unit test will be Wednesday. They will also have a folder check on Wednesday. We will begin work with the "Gameplan" Abstinence education workbooks on Thursday. Ask your 8th grader what they are learning in health class!

It's hard to believe that the trimester is more than half way over! We will be switching Encore classes before we know it.

The sixth graders just completed the unit on physical health. Overall, the students did very well on the unit tests. All grades have been updated in the gradebook. We are jumping into our next unit: The Human Body systems. We will be working on the body systems unit over the next couple of weeks.

The seventh grade classes are continuing work on the drug and alcohol unit. They did some great simulation activities and are learning all about the potential dangers of drugs and alcohol.

The eighth grade classes are experiencing the AWARE program this week. It is an excellent program and the students are learning a ton about sexuality, STD's and teen pregnancy.

Next Monday the AWARE program will start for students in eighth grade. Students will receive this presentation during their health class. If a student is not in health class they will be “pulled out” of their fifth or eighth hour class during one of the trimesters for this four day presentation.

There will be a parent presentation this Wednesday (October 8th) at 7:00 pm. Aspects of the sexuality education program will be discussed. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend!

So far this trimester has been off to a wonderful start. The students are working hard and doing a great job.

I look forward to meeting parents tomorrow night at the Open House/ Curriculum night. It is a great opportunity to meet parents and let everyone know what we will be working on in health classes this year!

The seventh graders have been typing an essay about their best friend. We have been discussing how important choosing friends can be.

Eighth grade classes have been working on the Nutrition unit. They did an interesting project last week where they analyzed their current diets. Many students realized that they need to make much healthier food choices!

The seventh and eighth graders will have their last health test on Tuesday! All students have had time to complete a study guide in class. It is important to be fully prepared for this last major graded test!

In addition, all three grades will have a final folder check next week. If anyone needs to get organized, you can see me before school to do so.

Lifeskills

This week we are lucky to have Mrs. Adelman from the Township of Downers Grove presenting the Lifeskills program. The Lifeskills program is taught at all of the surrounding junior highs. It is a GREAT opportunity for students to learn skills for use in their every day lives.

The sixth grade program focuses on bullying. Students will learn what to do in situations where they are victims of bullying. They will also learn how to help friends and how to make sure they are not being bullies themselves.

The seventh grade program focuses on drug education. The presentation goes along wonderfully with the Lakeview drug education curriculum.

The eighth grade program focuses on stress management and goal setting. Students will learn ways to relieve stress and how to prevent it from happening. They will also practice goal setting with an emphasis on preparing for high school.

The students should have a wonderful week! Please ask your child about the program and what they are learning :)
